Constructed in 1942-43, the complex occupies roughly one half of a city block approximately one half block south of Leavenworth Street, a major east-west thoroughfare and former street-car line. Two blocks north of Marcy Street is the Field Club, a late 19th  century private golf course; its associated residential neighborhood was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.
